Do the caps screw in? Is it possible to make one brass one so one side hard one side soft?

The caps are friction fit, so you could do it if you could turn a shoulder on the the brass down on a metal lathe to the exact diameter and push the brass replacement in with a hammer, an arbor press or something like that.
