Reliable hub
The Netgear DS108 is old technology and that has its advantages. The DS108 is a hub, meaning traffic appearing on one port appears on all ports. When troubleshooting networking problems, it is easy to sniff the traffic on the wire to determine the machine that is causing problems. While the performance of a hub won't always match that of a switch, the benefits for debugging networks is worth it.

Great for troubleshooting
This hub has been essential to capturing Wireshark packet captures for VoIP and Data network issues in the lab. Inexpensive enough to buy your own and keep it in your tool box.

Needed more ports
Already have two netgear DS104 4 port dual speed hubs but needed more ports at one so this 8 port replacement worked out great

a blazing, sturdy hub
Net gear is owned by by Bay Networks, which does not make rinky dink equipment. This hub has solid metal construction, sockets in the front, and lots of flickering lights that show the tranfer speed, and show who is connecting at either 10 or 100 Mbs. We use it to share one (adelphia 2-way cable) internet connection among 6 PCs, along with files and printing. No problems so far. This hub handles the standard hub task with ease, and with a utilitarian aesthetic quality that you won't see in 3com's white plastic. 3Coms tries to disguise their hub as an external modem- why?(p.s. I'm confused as to why 3Com's 8-port 10/100 hub costs over twice as much)

Disconnects every 20 min for no reason
I've gone through about four of these hubs at my office. Each and every one has had the exact same problem...after about 20 minutes, I lose my network connection. To fix it I have to unplug the Ethernet cord and re-plug it back in. An easy fix, but boy is it annoying to have to do this every 20 minutes, 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.Plus, if you connect remotely to your work computer as I do, you rely on that always-on connection to do that. What a nasty surprise when you attempt to connect to that machine and find that it's offline due to the stupid Netgear hub!

Worked Great For About 10 Years
I bought this hub about 10 years ago and it has been working faithfully all that time, until today. I had to open the case once when the heat sink came unglued from the main processor and was rattling around in the case, but I took out the heat sink and never replaced it. I've replaced it with a new Linksys 10/100 swithc wondering if it will last that long.
