Stunning (but bleak in places)
When I first read this trilogy, as I got to the end of the first book I decided that I wouldn't read any more of them, and then the cliff hanger prompted me to get the second book and carry on. The reason I wasn't going to carry on with the story is that there is a lot of pain and personal violence in it which is incredibly well written and which I found quite disturbing. I had hoped that the end of the first book would give some kind of closure which would let me leave it behind. It didn't. The narrative is gripping and as the trilogy moves on the characters are well rounded in terms of their fears, cowardice, anger as well as love and courage. When you finally get to the end there is no easy happy ending, but there is sense of hope. The world building is fantastic, the narrative is complex running along multiple timelines, but holds together well. The sense of pain and loss doesn't ever really let up, but you are left with a sense of understanding and admiration for the characters' resilience.

Very fun story line
I loved the story, with totally 'human' characters, but living in a very different world. Some slight problems for me in following who is actually who, and how are they related to others, but eventually I think I caught on to that part of the plot. They are very long books, and at my advanced age I have a lot of reading to catch up on, so I could have managed with maybe 100 less pages in each book, but alas, that seems to be the way of publishing now - Like restaurants, they all seem to thing More is Better, when I am usually satisfied halfway through a meal.

Interesting, inventive story
Jemisin has created a world (distant future earth?) where the enemy is not aliens or monsters, but the earth, itself. Strong characters, with flawed characteristics; i.e. human. It is a captivating story, rich, and detailed. However, a minor irritant--the third book has a constantly shifting point of view which can get a little confusing. If you don't try to keep every detail in focus in your mind, it can be overlooked. Overall, a very good trilogy.
