Easy to read and follow, using illustrations.
I previously downloaded a "Hacked" copy of this book that was copied on a copier machine. A lot of the words were missing because of the fold in the book and a lot of the pictures were too dark to get much of any details, again because of a copier machine. I can now see all illustrations clearly and read every word. This has helped me greatly to diagnose and repair my engine problems on my 1979 Johnson 6hp motor. It is now running very smoothly and I get to use my boat again. The price of this book was much less expensive at Amazon than buying at a marine store. I highly recommend this manual if you are having problems with your 2hp - 40hp Johnson/Evinrude outboard motor.

Ok for basic info, but could be more detailed
I have a Johnson 1986 15hp motor. Purchased this book to give me an idea how to undergo normal service and impeller replacement etc. For this the information is basic, but I got there. It does contain some good information with regards to outboard motor service and use, but there are important parts missing here and there. The book isnt terribly well organized but does have exploded parts diamgrams for most engines and sections. There is also some outdated information, particularly in relation to spark plug gaps. It lists 0.040" for most plugs, but since the late 80's OMC has recommended 0.030" spark plug gaps for most of their engines. Use the book only as a guide. It is not a step-by-step, detailed guide to fixing everything on an outboard, but useful as a starter nonetheless for those not familiar with older Johnson/Evinrude outboards.

Johnson OB Motor Guide
The Evinrude Johnson Outboard Shop Manual: 2-40 Hp 1973-1990 is very helpful for anyone taking apart to repair an engine. It has sections of the manual dedicated to the electrical system, the fuel system, and too many sections to mention. One very helpful feature is that it tells the factory specified part numbers for spark plugs, lower unit oil, etc. The only improvement that I would suggest is that it be more specific in the models covered, and not so many different engines be covered in one manual.

all the things you want to know
the reading takes a few, pages to get the idea of how the book is written. first chapter is like the last ... find your make and model then read forget the other models or you will be confused... want to know about your carb look up carb's then find your size mine a 35 hp ... half way thru the chapter is the sec on 35 hp with line drawing (all the parts ) and the adjustments... starter, same thing. etc just takes a little reading to find out it is a good ref book

Worst Technical Manual Ever Written
I have owned and read countless technical/shop manuals over the years and this is hands-down the WORST of them all. The organization of subject matter is terrible. You don't know which chapter to look for what. The table of contents and index are of no use. The manual reads like a novel- in paragraph form. You'll find yourself reading through paragraphs of non-pertinent information to find a number your are looking for such as the specified ignition timing. The information in this book is also very incomplete at best. In fact, this book does not even list the maximum RPM range for the motors. One chapter refers the reader to Chapter 5 for maximum operating RPM range, but this information is nowhere to be found in Chapter 5, or anywhere else for that matter! There are plenty of other dissappointments such as reference to lousy black-and-white pictures to identify a single screw that's not even labeled. If you're looking for a book that reads like a supermarket pulp fiction novel that will give you very basic small engine 101 knowledge, this book might be for you. If you are looking for a manual you can actually use for technical reference, do not buy this book! You will be sorely dissappointed. Instead, try the book by Seloc.

Makes for a good reference guide
Makes for a good reference guide, I restored a 1948 Johnson seahorse without a manual, it also didn't have the technology of today. These manuals do help you understand some of the electronics that are on some of these motors. That's why I use them mainly for references while working on them.

Good Book
This book is a good book, using it I was able to rebuild my lower unit, my starter, and redo the wiring harness. Finding information in the book is a little tricky, it's broken down by systems and model, and it covers a lot of models so you have to flip around a lot to find what you're looking for, but it's there. I would recommend it for anyone wanting to repair their old johnson, my 1979 35hp still runs great thanks to this book.

Not the best. Expected better for the price
Book should not be used by persons with some understanding of boat motors. Obvious steps were not stated. You have to jump around a section to determine sequence of work. there were comments in middle of text specifically for certain size of motor, where tittle did not mention that size of motor. I had read wrong size information section in hopes it would help and found notes that were specific to the size I was working on. There were sentences that were bad English and were confusing to a novice. References tool numbers and tool parts to be used, but does not show or explain fully, would have liked to see pictures of the tools. Does not list all components and has general detail drawings, i.e., O-rings, and Teflon sleeves
