Q: Dishwasher safe top rack only. What does this mean please ?

Hi.It’s because the heating element if the dishwasher is on the bottom,and wouldn’t be kind to plastic.

Q: If you put water in the lower section you can put a sandwitx up???

I'm not sure I'm understanding , but there is no separate seal. If you put water or anything that will leak, it can leak to the top shelf. But it won't leak out of the overall lunchbox. And it's not big enough to put a sandwhich on top

Q: can you fit a sandwich (using thick sliced bread) in the container?

not really unless you removed the crusts or cut into smaller squares the box isn't wide or long enough, unless you were using very small loaf of bread- like nimble or weight watchers but I think its still smaller than that! I use mine more for carrot sticks or fruit really, I hardly ever use the insert with it. if you are after one to fit a sandwich, go with the salad box or chill it lunchbox as they are much bigger in size.
